AFA Roommate Policy

WHAT is the roommate and lodging policy for AFA experiences?

  1. All student delegates attending an AFA experience must stay in the hotel arranged for the event.

  2. All student delegates attending an AFA experience will be assigned a roommate.

WHY does AFA require students to have a roommate?

  1. A core part of attending an AFA experience is meeting new people and getting out of our comfort zone to expand our perspectives and connections. The roommate experience is a crucial part of this!

  2. The cost of lodging for students is covered by AFA partners who believe in keeping these experiences as accessible as possible. AFA has a responsibility to its partners that this process is mindful of the financial and programmatic impacts it has on the experience.

  3. AFA seeks to reach as many students as possible. By utilizing double-occupancy rooming (roommates), more students can be selected and attend the experience.

  4. Since AFA’s inception, it has witnessed numerous benefits to the roommate structure. It has sparked decades-long friendships, created an accountability structure for attendance among students, and allows each student to have at least one friendly face during their experience.

HOW does AFA assign roommates?

  1. Students will room with students from the same track (AFA Leaders Conference only)

  2. Students will be roomed with students from a different school

  3. Students will be roomed with the same gender (single-sex rooming)

  4. Students will not be separated or assigned based on race, ethnicity, or religion.

WHO is responsible for lodging charges?

The basic room costs (nightly rate + tax) for all student delegates attending an AFA experience are covered through sponsorships from AFA partners.

Students are responsible for any incidentals, parking or miscellaneous room charges that occur during their stay (room service, Wi-Fi packages, etc.)
