AFA Announces 2012 Leader in Agriculture Award Winners

June 25, 2012 — Agriculture Future of America is pleased to announce Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh and Howard G. Buffett have been selected as the 2012 Leader in Agriculture Award recipients. AFA sponsors the award to honor individuals whose accomplishments in their personal lives and professional careers have distinguished them as mentors to young leaders and others in the agriculture industry.

Flinchbaugh serves as professor of agricultural economics at Kansas State University. In his forty-one-year tenure at Kansas State, he has been named Outstanding Teacher in the College of Agriculture three times. In addition to teaching, Flinchbaugh serves as an extension policy expert. He has assisted in the development of every farm bill since 1968, working closely with Capitol Hill politicians. He is greatly revered by his students and the agriculture industry.

Buffett, an Illinois farmer, has numerous accomplishments. In addition to growing crops on his Illinois farm and managing his family’s 400 acre farm in Nebraska, he is also involved in philanthropy and agriculture research. Buffett’s passion for agriculture is seen through the work of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, whose mission is to improve the standard of living and quality of life for the world’s most impoverished and marginalized populations. The foundation is focused on agriculture development and food security programs internationally. Through the foundation, Buffett oversees 1,300 acres of research farmland in Illinois, 920 acres in Arizona and another 9,200 acres in South Africa. He is also an advocate for conservation efforts such as no-till farming, nutrient management and cover crops.

Both men are recognized as leaders by the agriculture industry.

“Each year, AFA is pleased to identify individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders and demonstrated their passion for the agriculture industry in services beyond the duties of their chosen careers,” said Russ Weathers, AFA president and CEO. “The Leader in Agriculture award was the vision of AFA student leaders. They wanted to recognize and honor role models. Certainly the 2012 honorees fulfill this expectation.”

AFA is pleased to honor these two outstanding agriculture leaders. They will be officially recognized at the Leader in Agriculture Award Dinner on Nov. 2, 2012, at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center. This dinner is held in conjunction with the AFA Leaders Conference. The Conference, which hosts over 500 of the top collegiate men and women preparing for agriculture careers, will be held Nov. 1-4 in Kansas City, Mo.
