AFA Leaders Conference 2009
AFA Leaders Conference #13 is now history. In spite of the superstition associated with the number 13, it was positive for AFA.  A record number of students gathered with over 200 agri-business leaders, corporate recruiters, speakers and discussion leaders to enhance their skills and professional development. The Conference theme "Agriculture:  Many Sparks. One Fire." provided a stimulating atmosphere from beginning to end.  Mark Sanborn launched the Conference with a motivating message and Dr. Scott Vernon sent delegates home fired up to speak out with passion for agriculture.

A new record was set for the number of agricultural professionals who volunteer their time and talent to mentor AFA delegates as discussion leaders, panelists and program speakers.  The ratio was one professional for every two delegates. The "sparks" were certainly in the air as students and professionals gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities the future holds for a new generation of leaders.

Two national leaders - Christopher S. "Kit" Bond, United States Senator, Missouri and Carl M. Casale, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Monsanto Company - were recognized for their respective contributions and leadership to agriculture as the 2009 recipients of AFA Leader in Agriculture Award.

It was, as this year's theme suggests, a conference of Many Sparks. Thanks to everyone involved; students and industry representatives.  Your enthusiasm provided an environment of sharing and learning for all. Plans for the 2010 AFA Leaders Conference have already begun and we look forward to seeing you in Kansas City next year, November 4 – 7.

Leaders Conference could not happen without the support of corporations, associations, foundations and hundreds of individuals who support AFA's mission with their contributions.  We are indebted and certainly blessed. As we approach the Holiday season let us remember to be thankful for the many opportunities before us.
